Elektrokartbahn
About
Elektrokartbahn sits at an unusual address: the 5th floor of the Galeria Kaufhof department store at Koppenstraße 8 (10243 Berlin), above Ostbahnhof station, in the Friedrichshain district. Its 230 m electric track runs across 3,500 m² of fully air-conditioned space, a real comfort when the Berlin summer heats up.
The fleet has 16 electric karts that reach up to 10.5 kW and over 50 km/h, with speed capped according to the driver's age; full-face helmets are provided. Children can drive from age 8 once they reach 1.40 m. The track opens Monday to Thursday 3pm to 11pm, Friday until midnight, Saturday 10am to 1am and Sunday 10am to 9pm, opening from 10am during school holidays; bookings are taken Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm. The venue welcomes groups and corporate events and runs a Wii-Lounge (5 euros for 30 minutes, 8 euros an hour for one to four players). Contact: 030 245 40 160.
Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is one of the liveliest parts of Berlin, 3 km east of Mitte. Right nearby, the East Side Gallery lines 1.3 km of painted wall along the Spree, and the Mercedes-Benz Arena stands beside Ostbahnhof. The rest of the capital follows: the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag with its Norman Foster dome, the UNESCO-listed Museum Island with the Pergamonmuseum, the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße, the baroque Charlottenburg Palace and the Tiergarten. The Tempelhofer Feld, a former airport turned park, is great by bike, and Potsdam, 25 km to the south-west, adds the Sanssouci park and Cecilienhof palace, both UNESCO.
