Tahko Karting
About
In Tahkovuori, one of Finland's major ski resorts, Tahko Karting offers an experience found only in the far north: karting on natural ice. The track is laid out at the foot of the ski slopes, next to the pedestrian bridge, on a frozen stretch that serves as the layout each winter. You drive karts suited to the ice, where grip has to be earned and the slightest steering input turns into a slide to control.
The activity is open to drivers at least one metre thirty-five tall, and offers both long practice sessions and races with a starting grid and proper timed events. It is a fun way to discover ice driving, open to families as much as to groups staying at the resort. Like any winter activity, it depends on ice conditions and the weather, and runs through the cold season.
Tahko, near Kuopio in eastern Finland, is a destination known for skiing and outdoor activities, in the middle of a region of lakes and forests. In winter, the resort offers slopes, snowmobile trails and a Nordic atmosphere, and ice karting rounds off a day on the slopes nicely. It is an original sporting interlude, to book as part of a stay in the Finnish hills. In winter, the resort draws skiers from across the country, and ice karting offers an original extra activity for those wanting a break between runs. The long northern nights and snowy landscapes add to the sense of escape.
