About

In Kerecsend, near Eger, in northern Hungary, Agriaring lays out three hundred and seventy metres of open-air track, five metres wide, lined with tyre walls and fitted with professional timing on a digital display. You drive petrol karts here, from SODI machines of 200 cc to the more powerful 390 cc RIMO, enough to please beginners and confident drivers alike. There are even small pedal cars for the very youngest.

Karting stays open to all, with no licence or experience: a briefing, a helmet, and you head off to find your best lap. Access to the rental karts is from a height of one metre fifty, and children are welcome from the age of twelve at that height. Opening times follow the season, with longer hours in summer, so it is best to check before coming. People rarely leave after a single run, the urge to shave off a few seconds soon taking over.

Kerecsend lies on the doorstep of Eger, one of the finest towns in northern Hungary, famous for its castle that held out against the Ottomans, its Turkish minaret, the northernmost in Europe, and its neoclassical basilica. The town's thermal baths and the forests of the Bükk hills, ideal for walking, round out a visit. The region is easy to reach by the M3 motorway from Budapest, about an hour and a half away, which makes it a handy stop between the capital and the north-east of the country.
