Rostock is the largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, around 210,000 inhabitants, founded in 1218 and a former member of the Hanseatic League. Its old town keeps three medieval gates, including the Kröpeliner Tor, the Gothic brick Marienkirche with its astronomical clock of 1472, and one of the oldest universities on the Baltic, founded in 1419. The Hanse Sail maritime festival fills the harbour every August with hundreds of traditional sailing ships, and Rostock Zoo is among the largest in northern Germany. Warnemünde, 12 km to the north-west, lines up 3 km of sandy beach, a cruise port and the Bauhaus-style Teepott. Bad Doberan and its Cistercian Münster, and Heiligendamm, Europe's oldest seaside resort, round out the surroundings. Stralsund and its UNESCO-listed Hanseatic old town are 70 km to the east, Rügen 80 km away and Berlin 220 km to the south.
