Wakefield is a cathedral city in West Yorkshire, on the River Calder. Wakefield Cathedral has the tallest spire in Yorkshire. The Hepworth Wakefield, a large riverside gallery, is devoted to the sculptor Barbara Hepworth, born in the city. Close by, at West Bretton, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park shows open-air works by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth across a vast landscaped estate. The Battle of Wakefield, in 1460, was a notable episode of the Wars of the Roses. The area forms the Rhubarb Triangle, known for its forced rhubarb. Leeds 15 km north. The National Coal Mining Museum, set in a former pit, to the west. The Chantry Chapel of St Mary, on the medieval bridge over the Calder, is one of the few surviving bridge chapels in England. Sandal Castle, a ruined Norman castle tied to the 1460 battle, overlooks the town to the south. Pontefract and its historic castle lie to the east.
