Bocholt lies in the western Münsterland, 15 km east of the Dutch border, 70 km north-west of Essen and 100 km west of Münster. The historic old town features the town gate, the Liebfrauenkirche and the LWL textile museum. All around, more than a hundred moated castles dot the Münsterland, among them Burg Anholt about ten kilometres away, linked by the route of the 100 castles. Münster, 100 km to the east, carries through its town hall, the baroque Prinzipalmarkt and the promenade ringing the centre the UNESCO legacy of the Peace of Westphalia of 1648. Just over the border lie the Dutch Achterhoek and Twente, with Arnhem 50 km to the west.
