Bad Frankenhausen-Ringleben lies at the foot of the Kyffhäuser, 50 km north of Erfurt and 50 km west of Halle. The Kyffhäuser-Denkmal, Germany's largest equestrian monument, crowns the heights, and the Panorama-Museum holds a vast 1,796 m² mural painted by Werner Tübke. The Barbarossahöhle cave, one of the largest anhydrite caverns open to the public in Europe, is a few kilometres away. Bad Frankenhausen, a spa town, rounds out the visit with its salt springs and leaning tower. Further on, the Harz and its UNESCO-listed Rammelsberg mines, the Brocken rising to 1,141 m, Erfurt and its Gothic Mariendom, Halle with the Händel-Haus and the UNESCO Franckesche Stiftungen, Mühlhausen as a former free imperial city 60 km to the south-west, and Eisenach with the UNESCO Wartburg 80 km to the south-west, widen the tour.
