Steißlingen lies in the Hegau, 10 km north of Singen and 20 km west of Constance, at the foot of the region's iconic extinct volcanoes such as the Hohenkrähen, the Hohenstoffeln and the Mägdeberg. Constance keeps a medieval old town spared by the war, its Münster cathedral and the memory of the 1414-1418 council. Mainau Island and its gardens, along with the monastic island of Reichenau, a UNESCO site, dot Lake Constance. The ruined Hohentwiel castle crowns a volcanic crag at 686 metres. The Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen, the most powerful in Central Europe, lie 30 km west. The Black Forest opens up 50 km north.
